Abstract

665,409. Shoots and hoppers. PREPARATION INDUSTRIELLE DES COMBUSTIBLES. Aug. 25, 1949. [Sept. 1, 1948] No. 22127/49. Class 78 (i). The electrical resistance between a pair of electrodes contacting the material in a hopper controls a level indicating or recording device. The electrodes, one of which is suspended from the mouth of the hopper and the other of which is secured to the hopper, are connected in a bridge circuit at C, D. When there is an open circuit between the electrodes, i.e. when the hopper is not filled, the bridge is balanced so that the voltage e applied to the grid of a triode Tu is zero and thus the maximum anode current i will flow through the triode and a resistor N. The resultant volt drop across N will ensure that the voltage applied to the gas filled relay Th will be insufficient to allow it to operate. When the resistance between C-D decreases, due to the accumulation of material between the electrodes, the bridge becomes progressively unbalanced and the grid of Tu is given a progressive negative bias which progressively decreases the anode current i, and thus the volt drop across N, until the voltage applied to the relay Th is high enough for it to operate so operating an indicator M. The relay Th is chosen so that its fully saturated current is insufficient to damage the indicator M. To vary the value of the resistance between the electrodes which is necessary to operate the indicator M, so that this device can be used with various materials, the resistance m is made variable and the area of the electrodes can be altered. Specification 8791/12, [Class 39 (iii)], is referred to.
