Abstract
665,158. Shaft kilns; consuming smoke. CHINA & EARTHENWARE MILLERS, Ltd., BREWIN, E. S., and SHEMILT, J. T. April 4, 1950 [April 4, 1949], No. 9040/49. Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii). In a vertical or inclined shaft kiln 11 for the calcination of bone wherein the charge material is fed from a hopper 13 around a refractory tube 30, 31 formed with upper and lower ports, respectively and defining a space for the ignition of combustible gases, a removable lining is provided in the calcining zone in the form of a cylindrical or polygonal refractory tube 16 supported against the brick lining 10 by an annular plate 17 secured to the kiln structure. The lining 16 may be made in sections and is formed with downwardly-inclined ports 16 leading from a combustion chamber 22 in which are mounted gas. or other burners 21. Unconsumed gases from the ports 32, 36 and steam passing from the hopper 13 by a by-pass 35 may be led through a chimney 34 and a U-tube condenser to a separate combustion chamber where they are burnt with additional combustible gas to destroy noxious vapours. Calcined material falling through a shoot 23 is discharged by a scraper 28 reciprocated by a crank 27, a poker 37 being provided to prevent clogging of the shoot 23.
