Abstract

665,118. Building structures and units. FALLS, H. P. Jan 12, 1949 [Jan 16, 1948], No. 898/49. Classes 20(iv) and 87(i) A building monolithic structural component, e.g. roof; wall, floor or column, comprises a plurality of independent tubes 10 formed of insulating material extending substantially from end to end of the component and spaced from at least one face thereof, an unbroken layer of insulating material including the tubes extending throughout the component between its opposite faces, and concrete embedding these elements, the insulating layer completely separating material on one side thereof from any material on its opposite side. In the wall shown in Fig. 1, tubes 10 of corrugated cardboard, with a corrugated layer between two plain layers, or other suitable material are placed on end on a suitable footing. The cardboard &c. is preferably waterproof and treated to prevent bacterial decay. The structure is reinforced by vertical rods 14 which are connected by vertically spaced ties 15, and horizontal rods 17 which extend along the outer surface of the tubes and are tied to the rods 14. The spaced tubes are bridged by insulating material 19. Layers 20 of wire mesh may be tied to the rods 14. Concrete is now blown on to the structure to form layers 21, 22 with webs 23. A float may be formed by placing the tubes in units of two or more side by side, and the gaps between the units may be bridged by insulating ground strips. If desired, concrete may also be blown into the tubes. Fig. 4 shows a column with the tubes placed together and reinforced by rods 33, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39, concrete being blown on the outer faces, and into the tubes. The horizontal rods mav extend into the wall and act as rods 17. Fig. 5 shows a preferred form of tube with a base 40, cap 41, and transverse spacers 42.
