Abstract

535,471. Air-raid shelter. HULL, G. B. G. Oct. 4, 1939, No. 27159. [Class 20 (i)] An air-raid shelter comprises a cage-like structure built up of arched tubes joined together and spaced at a small distance apart by longitudinals having spaced notches or other spacing members. The arched tubes 10 are supported at their ends in apertures 14 of lower side tubular members 13, which are spaced apart by transverse tie members 16, secured by bolts and nuts. The arched,members are spaced apart by opposed notched plates 11 which are drawn together by bolts 9 to clamp the tubes in spaced position, the pitch being such that shrapnel and large pieces of material cannot pass into the interior of the cage-like structure so formed. Inner and outer cage-like structures may be formed into a shelter, the inner arched tubes being disposed in the gaps between the outer arched tubes, so that even small pieces of material cannot pass. The tubes may be filled with sand or similar material and the whole may be covered with a tarpaulin or other flexible cover. The cage may be embodied in the walls, ceiling and roof of any room of a building to reinforce it to constitute a shelter. The feet of the arcuate members may be formed by separate straight extension tubes diverging outwardly and thus increasing the floor width.
