Abstract

664,236. Grinding machines. BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. Dec. 1, 1949 [Dec. 30, 1948], No. 30852/49. Class 60 A support 20 for a grinding wheel or other rotary tool is mounted to swivel about a vertical axis on a platen 58 which is in turn supported about a separate axis on a slide 42 so that rotation of the platen adjusts the position of the support with respect to the slide without altering the angular relationship between these two members which are secured by a clamping device after adjustment. The invention is described with reference to a cylindrical grinding machine in which a grinding wheel 16 is driven by a belt 30 from a motor 26 mounted on an extension of the tool support 20. The latter swivels on a cylindrical bush 62 in the platen 58 which is in turn rotatably mounted on a pin 70 and provided with a number of tapered rockers 71 for selective engagement with a spring- loaded locking pin (not shown) in the slide 42. The assembly is clamped after adjustment by a bolt 74 which engages one of a number of screwed sockets 72, a compression spring 78 assuring complete withdrawal of the bolt during adjustment of the platen. The slide 42 is provided with a power traverse and is rotatably mounted on a bed 46. An internal grinding fixture 22 is provided.
