Claims.
The invention relates to a universal fixtur whereby a vise, jigs, or magnetic chucks may be supported from a fixed base at any desired angle.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a fixture of low height yet having considerable range for adjustment ina vertical plane relatla'e to pivotally mounted body portion or the device.
A further object oftheinvention is to provide a fixture having a threepoint contact between the body block and the side plates so as to e'fiiciently' carry the load imposed on the fixture.

Referring to the drawings, the devic'e iricludes where-member 8, a body block 9 side plates l0. a fixture mounting head I l and afixtur'e such as arise-I2 I The base member 8 is; a one piececa'sting haw e, Wis.,- assignor to De- I3 provided with clampingbolt receiving slots M at its ends (only one being shown) whereby the device may be bolted down to the table of a milling machine, drill press, grinder, or other machine tool for holding the work in the desired position, said member havingspaced arms or uprights I5 and an index carry ing upright l6 adjacent one' of the uprights I5.
The body block 9 is a solid steel block having side plate receiving cylindrical recesses 11 milled in its sides and a lengthwise extending borel8 therein. A transversely disposed sleeve 42 is mounted in the block and provided with a bore l8 of the same diameter as the bore 18, said sleeve having a tight fit in the block. This block 9 is pivotally carried on the uprights it by means of a two part spindle formed of two bolt headed shafts [-9 andjil extending through the bores l8 and i8, the threaded solid shank 2| of the shaft [9 engaging the threaded sleeve end 22 of the shaft 20' which shafts are journalled in alined bores 23 in the uprights l5, and when drawn up, carry the body block between said uprights with wear washers 24 between said block and said uprights and another washer 25 between one of the uprights and: an index plate 26 mounted on the shaft 20 and locked thereto against rotation by a headless set screw 21. The shafts l9 and 20 may be shouldered at 20' as shown, and other forms of spindles, for example a plain through bolt with mit,-maybe used if desired. The body block is keyed to the shafts l9 and 26 by taper shank screws 9 extending from the base portion of said body block into said shafts and indicated in Figs. 3 and '7.
The index plate 26 has graduations 28 cut or otherwlse suitably formed therein running from either side of its center position from O to and fixed indicator points 29 having tongue and groove connections 30 with'the top surfaces of the upright 16 are secured thereto by socketed head screws 3|.
The body block with its spindle supportformed by the shafts I9 and 20 is free to swing or pivot in the uprights I5 but may be locked in any desired angular position relative thereto by locks 32 cooperating with said shafts. One of the locks-is shown in detail in Fig. 6 and comprises two clamping sleeves 33and 34 mounted in a vertical bore 35 in the upright and a socket headed bolt 36 passes through the bore in the upper sleeve and has'threaded engagement with the threaded bore 31 of thelower sleeve.- The sleeves 33 and 34 are disposed on opposite" sides of the spindle (either shaft I9 or 20 to be clamped and are curved ing a flat base portion The side plates H! are annular steel plates which fit in the annular recesses H in the body block and pivot at H on the sleeve '42, so that they can revolve or turn relative thereto and at one side adjacent thev end 01 the block are provided with index markings 4|] reading from 0-50 on either side of the horizontal plane passing through the axis of the body block so as-to per ,mit angular adjustment of the plates in planes parallel to the pivotal axis of the block, said markings 4|! cooperating with a fixed index point 4| on the block. It will be noted that this meth- 0d of mounting the side plates on the body block provides a multiple point contact between said plate and block since should the plates be out of thrust contact with the sleeve 42 of the block, they may still contact the side walls 43 of the block.
For holding the side plates H] in the desired angular position, I provide a clamping bolt 44 for each plate, each bolt being mounted in a transverse threaded bore 45 in the sleeve 42, it being noted that the width of the plates are such that the heads of the bolts 44 engage the plates and the ends of the bosses formed by the sleeve 42.
The side plates ID are rigidly secured together by socket head screw 46, one being shown in Fig. 4, which pass through the fixture mounting head II and into the top portions of each of said plates Ill. At the same time an index pointer 41 which has a keyed connection 48 with the top portions of the plates and a complementary keyed connection 49 with the bottom portion of the head member I is clamped to these parts said connection 49 extending diametrically across said member The mounting head II is a circular metal disk provided with a central threaded aperture 50 and an annular groove 5|. The fixture H! which, for example is herein shown as a vise, is formed from a solid metal block having a circular base portion provided with a cylindrical recess 52 of a diameter to fit over the head II and having an annular recess within which a cylindrical index dial 53 has a drive fit, the upper portions of this block being milled out to provide a fixedvise jaw 54 and a companion jaw member 55 in which jaw screws 55 are adjustably mounted; The block also has a bore 51 provided with a counter bore 58 to receive a fiat socketed head screw 59 whose threaded shank 60 engages the threaded aperture 50, said screw forming a post about which the vise l2 swivels or turns. For clamping the fixture l2 in any desired angular position a pair of locking nuts 6| are mounted in diametrically disposed slots 62 in the base of the fixture and project over into the annular groove 5| of the head II at one side and into curved recesses 63 in the index dial 53 and socketed head bolts 64 mounted in the fixture l2 engage said nuts, and when drawn up, exert a clamping pressure between the nuts and the upper shoulder :of the groove 5| to hold the fixture in clamped position.
It will be noted that the dial ring 53 has degree markings 65 therein running from 0 to 360 and that as viewed in Fig. 2 the side 66 or the pointer 41 cooperates with these markings to determine the angular setting of the fixture.
Instead of the vise, other work holding fixture attachments such as jig mounting plates, magnetic chucks, movable jaw Vises may be mounted on the head member With this construction it will be noted that the body member is adjustable angularly about its pivotal axis, the side plates are adjustable angularly relative to the body plate and in a plane at right angles to the pivotal mounting of the body, and that the'fixture member is in turn angularly adjustable relative to the side plates, thus providing a three angle fixture with locks for each adjustment.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular formor arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having spaced uprights, a spindle journalled in said uprights, means for, locking said spindle in diiferent angular positions relative to said base, a body block mounted on said spindle to turn therewith between said uprights and provided with spaced side recesses, side plates mounted to swivel in said recesses, means for holding said side plates in diiferent angular positions relative to said body block, means for connecting said side plates together, a work holding member supported by said side plates and angularly adjustable in a plane at right angles to the planes of movement of said side plates, and means for locking said member in adjusted angular position.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having spaced uprights, a spindle journalled in said uprights, an index plate mounted on said spindle adjacent oneoi said uprights, a fixed indicator mounted on said base adjacent said index plate, means for locking said spindle in different angular positions rela= tive to said base, a body block mounted on said spindle to turn therewith between said uprights and provided with annular recesses at opposite sides thereof, side plates mounted to swivel in said recesses, means for holding said plates in difierent angular positions relative to said body block, a head member connected to said side plates, a work-holding member rotatably mounted on saidhead member and angularly adjustable in a plane at right angles to the planes of movement ofsaid side plates, and means for locking said member in adjusted angular position. v
3. In a device of the character described, .the combination with a base having spaced uprights,- a spindle journalled in said uprights, means for locking said spindle in difierent angular positions relative tosaid base, a body block mounted on said spindle to turn therewith between said uprights and provided with spaced side recesses, side plates mounted to swivel insaid recesses, means for holding said side plates in different angular positions relative to said body block, a cylindrical head member connected to said side plates, awork holding member rotatably mounted on said head member in a plane at right angles to the planes of movement of said side plates and carrying an index dial, an indexing pointer having keyedcon nection 'with said side plates cooperating with 5 said dial, and means for clamping said work holding member to said head member in adjusted angular position. i
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having spaced uprights, a spindle journalled in said uprights, means for locking said spindle in diflferent angular positions relative to said base, a body block mounted on said spindle to turn therewith between said uprights and provided with spaced side recesses, side plates mounted to swivel in said recesses, means for holding said plates in different angular positions relative to said body block, a cylindrical head member connected to said side plates and provided with an annular groove, a Work holding member rotatably mounted on said head member in a plane at right angles to the planes of movement of said side plate and carrying an index dial, an indexing pointer secured to said head member and cooperating with said dial, bolts mountedon said work holding member, and nuts engaging said bolts and having portions projecting into said annular groove to clamp said holding member to said head member in adjusted angular position,
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having spaced uprights,
a spindle comprising bolt headed shafts journalled in said uprights and having threaded connection with each other at their inner ends, means for locking said spindle in different angular positions relative to said base, a body block mounted on said spindle to turn therewith between said uprights and provided with spaced side recesses, side plates mounted to swivel in said recesses, means for holding said side plates in different angular positions relative to said body block, means for connecting said side plates together, a work holding member supported by said side plates and angularly adjustable in a plane at right angles to the planes of movement of said side plates, and means for locking said member in adjusted angular position.
