663,768. Weighing apparatus. WILLIAMS & SONS, Ltd., S., and GAMBLE, F. D. M. Aug. 24, 1949 [Sept. 6, 1948], No. 23441/48. Class 143. In a crane load weighing apparatus similar to that described in Specification 663,766, a compensating unit corrects the weight indicated for variations in the rate of the counterbalancing spring 8 and for the weight of hoisting and luffing cables supported by the weighing mechanism. This unit comprises an axially fixed piston 25 which is continuously rotated to reduce friction, a cylinder 3 which is axially movable against the counterbalancing spring 8 on receipt of oil at a pressure proportional to the load, and a bell crank lever 1 one end 4 of which is connected with the weight indicating apparatus and the other end 5 of which is constrained to move along a path determined by the shape and position of a cam bar 6. Bar 6 is curved to correct movement of the end 4 of the bell crank for movement of a chain 17, coupled to the output shaft of a differential (not shown) which summates movements of the hoisting and luffing winches, rotates screws 11, 12 which through nuts 9, 10, alter the position of the bar. 6 in such a manner that movement of the end 4 is also corrected for the weight of hoisting and luffing cables supported by the pressure generating member (not shown) connected with the cylinder 3.
