Abstract
693,171. Pressure gauges. GARRETT, F. A. May 8, 1951 [May 8, 1950], No. 11434/50. Class 106 (ii). Apparatus for indicating fluid pressures or torque comprises a steelyard adapted to be influenced by the pressure in the system to which it is applied, the steelyard being provided with a lever extending from it in a position adjacent to its fulcrum, and a ram, diaphragm capsule or similar device, influenced by the pressure in the system to which the apparatus is applied is arranged to act on the lever, the steelyard being balanced by a movable load weight in conjunction with shifting mechanism comprising a screw-threaded shaft mounted to rotate on the balancing arm of the steelyard and in geared connection with an indicator. As shown, Fig. 1, a bracket 1 has adjustable fulcra pins 2 engaging bearings 5 in a hollow head 10 separating side members 7, 7 of a steelyard balancing arm 6, the members being connected at their forward ends by a spacer 14 and rear ends by a balance weight 9. A travelling balance weight 15 embraces the members 7, 7 and has a screw-threaded hole 16 engaging a thread 17 on a shaft 13 whose bearings are formed in the spacer 14 and head 10. A pendant lever 11 extends from the head 10 and is fitted with a hardened steel stud 18 engaging a ram 19 of a hydraulic cylinder 20 fixed on the bracket 1 and having a screw-threaded inlet nozzle 21 to which a union 23 secures a pipe 22 connected with a system the hydraulic pressure of which is to be indicated on a counter 132. When pressure is applied to the lever 11 the steelyard is re-balanced by turning a handle 35 to drive a chain of gears 34, 33, 32, bevel gears 29<SP>1</SP>, 29 and gears 26. 25 and rotate the shaft 13 causing the weight 15 to travel therealong. The gear 32 is fixed on a shaft 30 an extension of which drives the counter 132. The gears 25, 26 have straight teeth of fine pitch and when the arm 6 is horizontal the gears 25, 26 lie in a vertical plane containing the fulcra pins 2 and the stud 18. The gear ratios and other dimensions are so chosen that the counter indicates pressure in pounds or if used in conjunction with a dynamometer such as described in Specification 563,534 it may indicate torque in foot pounds. Pointers 135 on the spacer 14 co-operate with fixed pointers 36 to indicate a position of balance. Instead of the handoperated gearing an electric motor may drive the shaft 30 by a pulley driving belt and pulley, with suitable switches for controlling the motor. A diaphragm or capsule may replace the hydraulic ram. Specification 663,534 is referred to.
