Abstract

663,496. Mixing appliances. BAKELITE CORPORATION. July 14, 1949. [Aug. 6, 1949] No. 18643/49. Class 86. Consists in a method of and an apparatus for continuously milling and fluxing a plastic mixture wherein such mixture is passed between a pair of oppositely revolving parallel rolls having co-operating spiral screws, each roll having at least one non- threaded surface thereon, and through a passageway formed between said non- threaded surface and a substantially circumferential barrier projecting from a housing confining said rolls. In the embodiment of Fig. 10 which is a combination of the embodiments of Figs. 7 and 8, not shown, each of a pair of oppositely driven rolls 21, 22, Fig. 2, closely confined within a jacketed housing has intermeshing left- and right-hand screw threads interrupted by a smooth cylindrical surface 79 and by V-shaped non-threaded surfaces 82, 84. The inner cylindrical surfaces of the housing, adjacent the smooth annular surfaces 79 are recessed to receive semi-annular inserts 80, 81 from which barriers of semi-helical formation project towards the surface 79. The inner cylindrical surfaces of the housing. adjacent the annular V-shaped surfaces 82, 84 on the rolls are recessed to receive inserts 42, 36, respectively having inwardly projecting V-shaped semi-annular barriers between which the V-shaped annular surfaces rotate. The mixture is fed into the nip of the rolls through an opening above the surface 79 and is discharged from surfaces 52 by means of rotary or scraper knives, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown. The discharge surfaces 52 may be annularly recessed so that the discharged material is of ribbed cross-section.
