Abstract
677,208. Mixing appliances. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 29, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1949], No. 23898/50. Class 86 A mixer comprises a chamber containing intermeshing lobed stirrers, means for forcing material to be mixed into one end of the chamber and means whereby the mixed material is discharged from the other end, the chamber and stirrers being so shaped and spaced as to provide sufficient clearance for the passage of a thin layer only of the material whether between the intermeshing stirrers or between the stirrers and wall of the container. As described, the mixer comprises a feed hopper 11 opening into a passageway 12 extending through a casing 13. The passageway 12 has the form of two intersecting cylinders or near cylinders through which shafts 16, 17 carry lobed stirring blades 21, 22, the ends of the shafts extending beneath the feed hopper where they carry feed screws 18, 19. The stirring blades 21, 22 intermesh with some clearance and are of trochoidal cross-section so that this clearance will not vary widely as the shafts are rotated. Clearance is also provided between the stirring blades and the walls of the passageway 12. It is stated to be desirable to employ a minimum clearance of about 0.03 inches in at least one of these places. It is preferred to make the clearance between the stirring blades about 2 to 3 or more times as large as the clearance between the stirring blades and the walls of the passageway. Moreover, the clearances may vary along the length of the stirrers and this variation in clearance may be obtained altering the cross-sectional area of the passageway and/or stirrers and/or inclining the shafts 16, 17. The clearances may also vary as the shafts rotate. Additional material may be fed into the mixer through a conduit 20 and the mixed product is discharged through a conduit 23, Fig. 2 (not shown), in the end wall of the mixer. A jacket surrounding the casing and ducts through the stirrers are provided for circulation of heat-transfer medium. The stirrers may be grooved as at 29 and 31, Fig. 4, to receive overlapping baffle discs 32, 33 which form a barrier around which the materials are caused to flow.
