Abstract

953,310. Extrusion machines. BARMER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Feb. 12, 1963 [Dec. 20, 1962], No. 5718/63. Heading B5A. A screw extruder, particularly for processing thermoplastic scrap materials of low bulk density, comprises a heatable casing having an inlet 5, a rotatable screw 1 having a thread 7 decreasing in depth in the direction of feed, the major diameter of the screw in the length thereof contained in the feed zone 2 and an adjacent inlet zone 3 being reduced to not more than one third of the initial diameter, the reduction in the major diameter per thread turn in the zone 2 being at least equal to half the length of the screw pitch, and the major screw diameter being approximately constant throughout a melt zone 4. The screw 1 has a core of constant diameter throughout its length. The casing in the region of the inlet zone 2 has a ridged friction generating surface 8. In the feed zone 2 the edge of the thread 7 has notches 12 and cooperates with knives 14 on the casing wall to disintegrate the inflowing material.
