663,386. Stuffing-box substitutes. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1950 [Feb. 7, 1949], No. 3371/49. Class 122(v) In a labyrinth type sealing device between two relatively rotating parts 10, 12, cne of the parts 12 is provided with a plurality of frustro-conical members 14 each having at its narrower end a thickened lip 14b providing an internal cylindrical surface to co-operate with fins 11 or a cylindrical surface on the other of the parts, the frustro-conical members 14 being supported by their wider ends on said one part 12 in a rested relationship with one another but with the thickened lips 14b at their narrower ends axially spaced from one another. The frustroconical members 14 have lips 14c at their wider ends disposed in a recess in the part 12 and held in abutment therein by assymetrically arranged bolts 16 or other means, the lips 14c having a greater axial dimension than the lips 14b so that the latter are axially spaced and the frustroconical members 14 free for local expansion at their narrower ends.
