Abstract
A process for treating cutting tools, such as drills, reamers, milling cutters and lathe tools, to form on them a lubricating film as described in Specification 660,129, comprises diffusing either molybdenum or boron into the surface of the tool and then converting either the molybdenum to molybdenum di-sulphide or the boron to boron nitride. The molybdenum or boron may be diffused into the surface of the cutter or its cutting faces or edges by any known process, for example, by using a gaseous halide of the substance. After the diffusion process, any suitable sulphurizing or nitriding process may be used; sodium polysulphide is given as an example of a suitable sulphurizing substance.
