Abstract

663,214. Soldering-irons. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Feb. 2, 1950 [Jan. 13, 1949], No. 989/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVII] The temperature of the bit 10 of a soldering iron is controlled by a switch responsive to the differential expansion of the casing 8 and the bit 10 or a member 1 in thermal contact with the bit. In the form shown, the member 1 is surrounded by a heating coil 13 which is surrounded by a ceramic bush 7 inside the casing 8 which may be made of " Invar " (Registered Trade Mark), and the expansion of the member 1 is transmitted by a rod 6 and bell-crank 29 to a micro-switch, not shown, mounted on a member 16, the position of which within a box 14 is adjusted by a screw 19. The box 14 is fixed to the casing 8. The handle 33 is in two parts and secured to the box 14. In a modification the handle is of piston grip shape and the rod 6 bears directly on the micro switch, the bell-crank 29 being omitted.
