Abstract

663,158. Gas turbine plant. NETTEL, F. Dec. 20, 1949, No. 32629/49. Class 110(iii) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXV] In a supercharger set for internal-combustion engines an exhaust gas turbine 17 drives a supercharging and scavenging blower 15. At starting, the turbine shaft is driven by an electric motor 20 or other power unit, and air from the blower being directed by a flap valve 26 into a combustion chamber 28. Fuel fed into chamber 28 by a nozzle 30<SP>1</SP> is ignited and the hot gases so formed are led into the exhaust manifold 12 and so enter the turine 17, whereupon the latter accelerates to a speed in excess of that of motor 20 which can now be uncoupled by an over-running clutch 19 and stopped. After adjusting the fuel supply to nozzle 30<SP>1</SP> in order to bring the supercharger set 14 to its rated speed a magnetic or other form of slip coupling 21 on the blower shaft is rendered operative to drive a gear train 22 and start the engine; the fuel supply to nozzle 30<SP>1</SP> now being reduced or stopped altogether and the valve 26 being adjusted to allow air from the blower to enter intake manifold 11. The mass of the rotating part of the supercharger set may be increased to facilitate starting and the flap valve and the valve 31 controlling the fuel supply to nozzle 30<SP>1</SP> may be conjointly controlled.
