Abstract
662,885. Furnaces. STEVENS, A. H. (Anthracite Equipment Corporation). May 10, 1949, No. 12432/49. Class 51 (i). [Also in Groups XI and XIII] Heating apparatus comprises a fuel chamber with an opening for discharging ash, an opening through which fuel is supplied continuously so that an ejecting force is exerted on the ash, compartment means for heating a fluid medium surrounding passage means for the escape of combustion gases and means for continuously causing a draught through the fuel and causing combustion gases to pass through the passage means at high velocity to accelerate heat transfer. In one embodiment of the invention (Fig. 1) a chamber 11 is fed with fuel through an opening 13 and ash is discharged through openings 15<SP>1</SP>, 15 in the casing of the apparatus through which the ends of a grate 14 project. The combustion chamber 11, the fan compartment 23 and the passages through which combustion gases are led to the chimney are surrounded by a fluid-containing compartment, a part of which forms a channel 37 passing through the combustion chamber in contact with the fuel to prevent active burning at the top of the pile. Combustion gases are drawn upwardly by a fan 45 through the space between the channel 37 and the main part of the fluidcontaining compartment into which heat conducting bars 50 may extend from the fluidcontaining compartment. They then flow horizontally through an opening 36 into the fan compartment 23 from which they are dispelled through a chimney 32. Fly ash entering the fan compartment 23 is prevented from reaching the chimney 32 by a baffle 47 which deflects it through a passage formed between the fan chamber 23 and a plate 28 to the combustion chamber 11. In a modification of the invention (Fig. 5) gases are drawn from the combustion chamber 61 by a fan 69 through a horizontal passage 68. The fan drives the gases through an annular passage 71 surrounding the horizontal passage 68 and thence through a duct 77 to a vertical flue 79 which they enter tangentially. Fly ash separates out and falls through the vertical flue 79 to the grate 64 at the base of the combustion chamber 61. Fuel is supplied continuously to a hopper 63.
