662,636. Self-contained systems. MORRISON, A. C. Nov. 19, 1948, No. 32037/47. Class 38 (iv). To prevent overloading of the generator of a selfcontained system comprising prime-mover, generator and consumer, such as is described in Specification 604,899, a switch 8 normally closed by a spring 10 and shortcircuiting a variable part of a resistance 16 in the shunt field circuit of a machine 13 (which may be the generator of the system, or, in the case of an A.C. system, the exciter for the alternator) driven by the prime-mover, is opened by a governor 2 to reduce the voltage of the machine when the speed of the prime-mover falls to a predetermined value. The governor may also control the fuel supply to the primemover. The remainder of resistance 16 may form part of an automatic voltage regulator for the machine. The inherent hunting of the system upon overload may be utilized to signal this condition and the speed of hunting may be slowed down by fitting the switch with a dashpot. Instead of directly acting upon the resistance 16, the switch 8 may control that resistance through a relay.
