Abstract

662,473. Systems of charging condensers. LAURENCE INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENT & CONTROL CO., Ltd. Jan. 13, 1950 [May 4 1949], No. 11872/49. Class 38 (iv). The voltage to which a condenser 5 for operating a photo flashlamp is charged is rendered independent of voltage variations of the charging source by a relay A which is controlled by a circuit responsive to the condenser voltage and which disconnects the condenser from the charging source upon the attainment of a predetermined voltage. The relay may be of the electrostatic or electromagnet type and, in the latter case, preferably has its iron circuit formed of low remanence material, such as Swedish iron. As shown in Fig. 1, a potential divider 1, 2 applies to an auxiliary condenser 6 and a discharge tube 7, 8, a voltage proportional to that across the main condenser 5 and when this has attained the predetermined value the tube strikes and discharges the auxiliary condenser through the relay which picks up, locks in over contacts a1 and opens the charging circuit of the main condenser at contacts a2. Due to current taken by the potential divider and relay, the voltage across condenser 5 starts to fall, so that the relay eventually drops out, closing contacts a2 to initiate re-charging of the condenser. In a modified circuit, the relay drops out under time control instead of voltage control. A further arrangement uses a moving- coil relay as the voltage-sensitive means.
