A switch, e.g. an air-insulated or oil-immersed high or low tension switch, has its contacts mounted at the rear of an auxiliary panel 2 and operable through gearing by a handle 12 mounted on a spindle 9 and arranged in front of a main panel 1 supporting the auxiliary panel by means of bolts 33. In a multi-pole change-over switch, the movable flicker-type contact arms 3 are pivoted co-axially in brackets 4 and are connected together by a bar 17 fixed at 18 to an operating arm 15 secured to a bevel wheel 14. The latter meshes with a pinion 13 on the spindle 9 so that rotation of the handle 12 causes rotation of contacts 3 from one set of fixed contacts 5 to a second set 6 mounted on a rearward extension 7 of the panel 2. In a modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), suitable for heavier currents, the bevel gear and pinion are replaced by a worm and worm wheel. The panels 2, 7 may be in one piece or, as shown, may comprise separate parts secured together at 34. The contacts 6 may alternatively be arranged so that less or more than 90 degrees rotation of the contacts 3 is required, and the switch may alternatively be of the simple make-and-break type. A lost-motion spring connection may be arranged between the arm 15 and the contacts 3 so as to provide a rapid action.
