Abstract

662,317. Mortars; bomb throwers. SOC. NOUVELLE DES ESTABLISSEMENTS BRANDT. Nov. 14, 1949. [March 15, 1949] No. 29108/49. Class 92 (ii). Relates to muzzle-loaded bomb throwers and like guns of the kind in which the striker 41 can either be locked in a forward protruding position, through the medium of a sleeve, for instant firing when the projectile encounters it, or withdrawn to a position where firing can be controlled. According to the invention the striker forms a valve, at 38, with the sleeve to prevent rearward escape of the gases of explosion. In the construction shown, the striker 41 and guide 22, 23 are located in a cylindrical housing 11 which, by means of a bush 7, is secured to the base 3 of a mortar. The inner part 23 of the sleeve is secured to the outer part 22, is formed with a seat for the valve on the striker, and is bored to permit the stem 40 of the striker to slide therein. The outer part 22 has a thin-walled forward part 26 adapted to open out slightly to provide a seal with the housing 11 when subjected to gas pressure, and the rear face of the part 22 is engaged by the face 34 of a flange on a slidable sleeve 33. The rear end of the striker stem 40 is fitted with a hook 46. This hook can be retracted by a nose 63 of a spring- controlled hammer of the firing mechanism, which mechanism is removably fitted in the base 3 and is constructed in substantially the same manner as the removable firing mechanism disclosed in Specification 623,708. Operation. By a suitable adjustment of a knob 51 of the firing mechanism an arm 571 of a two-armed lever pivoted at 58 is brought to bear against the sleeve 33 and this in turn moves the guide 22, 23, and the striker forwards to the forward "automatic" firing position. Reverse rotation of the knob 51 swings the arm 57<SP>1</SP> clear of the sleeve and enables the hammer to function, upon moving a firing lever 67, as in Specification 623,708.
