Abstract

1,166,077. Line firing gun; projectiles. MOBELL MARINE DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 11 March, 1968 [12 Dec., 1966], No. 55544/66. Headings F3A and F3X. [Also in Division F2] A line firing gun comprises a pressure chamber 17 for containing compressed gas and a valve 20 for releasing gas from the chamber to project a projectile from the gun. The valve 20 is mounted within the chamber 17 and is provided with a firing rod 22 projecting through the wall of the chamber 17 opposite the valve seat, the area provided by the firing rod 22 and a seal 25 therefor for gas pressure to act in a direction away from the valve seat being slightly less than the effective area of the valve 20 for gas pressure urging the valve 20 against the valve seat. The rear end of the firing rod 22 has a boss 32 surrounded by a spring loaded sleeve 28. The sleeve 28 is urged forwardly to cock its spring 26 and is held in the cocked position by a spring loaded projection 29. Actuation of a trigger 31 depresses the projection and allows the sleeve 28 to move rearwardly, shoulders 27 of the sleeve striking shoulders 33 of the boss 32 to lift the valve from its seat to eject the projectile. The projectile may comprise a tubular portion closed at one end by a moulded rubber nose the line being attached to a piece of lead set into the nose and passing through a slit in a piece of felt at the open end of the tubular portion (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further embodiment the projectile comprises a tennis ball cover filled with a hard setting rubber composition in which are dispersed lead shot (Fig. 6, not shown). A pressure regulating valve 19 is provided and gas is supplied to the chamber 17 through a one-way valve 18.
