[Also in Group XV] Method and apparatus for labelling and stamping articles carried by a conveyer belt in which the articles are pressed against one another and thus mutually support each other and are detained in groups in a predetermined position in which they are subjected to a known surface treatment while the travelling belt continues its movement. The articles 2 are fed along a conveyer 1 by star wheels 4 and 5 in groups of six. A motor 11 drives, through a worm 12 and magnetic coupling 13, two shafts 14 and 15. Curved members 16, 17 on shaft 14, through levers 18 lift rods 19 of contacts 10 to close the magnetic coupling 13 except during the interval just before and after the application of the label. Curved members 20, 21 through levers 22 operate arms 8 to disengage from locking position just after applying the label, to feed in the articles. Curved members 23a, 23b by means of levers 24 turn the shaft 3a to prevent the arm 8 relocking the disc 6 and so prevent the star wheels from rotating. Members 25, 26 on the shafts 14, 15 effect horizontal reciprocating movement of the pressure members 27, 28 and members 29, 30 operate the labelling device 31, 32. The curved member 33 drives the label holder 34 up and down. The holder first descends past paste rollers 37, 38 to apply paste then rises to a label magazine 31, 32 where the label is secured to the holder then descends to pressure members 27, 28 where the label is applied to the article. Labels may be applied from both sides of the belt simultaneously and the articles may be in zig-zag formation. Alternatively, stamp pressers and colour rollers may be used for stamping the articles.
