Abstract
662,109. Compasses and dividers. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd., and COMPTON, A. H. S. T. July 4, 1950 [July 6, 1949], No. 17836/49. Class 97 (iii). The arms a, b, Fig. 2, of a pair of compasses or dividers are pivoted on a bolt c supported in a forked member d carrying the head e. The arms a, b are recessed to receive conical bearings f. Each arm is provided with an annular steel insert h, the opposing plane surfaces of the inserts being separated by ball bearings g mounted in a flexible plate-like member k pivoted on the bolt c and having a tongue l engaging a hole m in the head e. As shown in Fig. 3, the member k is provided with an even number of holes of slightly smaller diameter than the balls g; alternate balls are mounted in the holes on opposite sides of the member. A bolt i is provided between the lower ends of the fork d to adjust the pressure exerted on the cone bearings and on the balls and the member k. The head e is by this arrangement maintained central with respect to the arms. The member k may be flat or corrugated and may have dishings about the holes, or the holes may be bevelled. According to the Provisional Specification the balls may ride in circular grooves in the plane bearing surfaces.
