Abstract
681,741. Gauging-apparatus. SHEFFIELD CORPORATION. April 24, 1950 [Oct. 8, 1949], No. 10001/50. Class 106 (ii). Apparatus for gauging a dimensional relationship between surfaces of a pair of cooperating parts comprises a plurality of gauging heads of such size and shape as to substantially interfit between said surfaces when the latter are concentric, at least two of said gauging heads having a fluid passage an end of which co-operates with a surface to be gauged to provide for a measurable leakage of fluid supplied under pressure. Apparatus for gauging the distance between two concentric cooperating parts such as the raceways of an antifriction bearing comprises three gauging and spacing heads 40, 41, 42, Fig. 1, carried by radial arms, one 35, screwed to an inclined face 11 of a base 10 with a spacing block 37, one 21, screwed to a block 20, Fig. 2, carried, to allow for radial play, by spring blades 19 attached to a block 18 screwed to an arm 16 which extends from a sleeve 15 rotatable on a shaft 13 fixed in a central passage 12 in the face 11 by a nut 14, and one 24 similarly mounted on an arm 25 extending from a sleeve 26 rotatable on the first sleeve 15. Either or both of the arms 16, 25 may be moved by means of handles 33, 34 connected through pivotally interconnected links 33<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP> to a common handle 27 through which the heads 40, 41 may be moved adjacent to the head 42 for loading, eccentrically, the raceways 44, 45, Fig. 4, which may then be centralized by moving the heads 40, 41 until, preferably, the three heads are equally spaced, as determined by stops 28, 29, while the inner flanges of the raceways rest on surfaces 64, 65, 66 of the arms 35, 24, 21 which are coplanar with the surface 63 of a rest plate 61. The average distance between the raceways is gauged by measuring the fluid flow from outlets 57, 58, adjacent the inner and outer raceways, to passages 56 in the gauging heads which are supplied with air under pressure from a regulator 47. The air passes through flow determining means, comprising a tapered tube 48 and indicating float 49, to a coupling member 50 through which air is supplied to a tube 52 and to two flexible conduits 51. The conduit 51 for the head 40 extends freely through an arcuate slot 53 and clearance hole 54 to communicate with a passage 55 in the arm 21 leading to a transverse passage 56 in the head 40 with discharge outlets 57, 58, slightly recessed, and a discharge channel 60 to provide for the release of air from the passage 56. The gauging heads 41, 42 are similarly formed; while the supply of air to the head 41 is similar to that to the head 40, the head 42 is supplied through passages from the tube 52. The arms 21, 24, 35 may be replaced by others having heads of different size and shape for gauging other raceways, a pressure-tight seal between passages 55, 55<SP>1</SP> being obtained, e.g. by means of a yielding sealing ring. In a modification, Fig. 11, to provide for foot control of the centralizing means, an inclined wall 11<SP>1</SP> of the base 10<SP>1</SP> is centrally recessed to accommodate a bearing sleeve 71 in which a hollow shaft 26<SP>1</SP> fixed to an arm 251 is rotatable, in which again a central shaft 151 fixed to an arm 16<SP>1</SP> is rotatable. The arms 251, 16<SP>1</SP> have the same function as the arms 25, 16 except that the links 33<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP> are omitted and the shafts 261, 151 are keyed to wheels 73, 72 which may be simultaneously rotated in opposite directions through cables 74, 75 co-operating with pulleys 76, 77 fixed to a shaft 78 and controlled by a cable 80 which may be pulled down by depressing a foot treadle to swing the arms 16<SP>1</SP>, 251 upwardly; or the cable 80 may be connected to a weight the force of which may be overcome by the foot treadle to permit downward movement of the arms 16<SP>1</SP>, 25<SP>1</SP> from a normal raised position in which they are held by the weight. The apparatus may be used for gauging an inner and outer race in co-operation to determine the size of ball to be used therewith or by using one standard race, races of the other type may be gauged and classified.
