661,035. Vehicle opening-tops. WEATHERSHIELDS, Ltd., and BISHOP, W. H. Dec. 7, 1949. [Dec 8, 1948] No. 31739/48. Class 108(i). A sliding roof for a saloon car having a fixed sheet metal head, comprises one or more panels slidably guided at opposed edges in grooves or channels e in rubber mouldings d fitting on to ribs, beads or the like b forming part of stiffening members a secured to the edges of an opening cut in the head. The panels may slide longitudinally of the head, but they are preferably arranged to slide transversely, from a position in which they close the roof opening, to a position in which they overlie each other at the centre of the opening or in which one panel overlies the other at one side of the opening. In this preferred form of the invention the stiffening member a made of rolled or extruded metal is welded or riveted to the edges of the cut opening, and the moulding d is fitted all round the opening. The panels f, g, are adapted 'to slide in the grooves e so that their inner edges overlap within a channel section h welded &c to the head so as to extend longitudinally below the opening at the middle of its width. A cover strip j overlies the panels in alignment with the section h, and is welded &c at its ends to the outside of the head. A frictional panel locking member k is mounted in the channel h. The panels may be of sheet metal, plastic, fibre, or other suitable material, and may have their edges folded or doubled as at m. A brass or other channel n is fitted into the groove e or may be fixed to the panel rims. The panels are positioned above the head to assist drainage of the roof.
