Abstract

689,041. Sliding roofs for vehicles. WEATHERSHIELDS, Ltd., and BISHOP, W. H. Jan. 22, 1951 [Dec. 31, 1949], No. 33493/49. Class 108 (i). A sheet-metal roof for a saloon car is formed from three pressings comprising a centre deck and near and offside quarter pressings welded together at their edges, in which a raised rib or bead, preferably of inverted V or partcylindrical cross-section, is formed on each edge of the centre deck or on the inner edge of each quarter pressing and the adjacent edge of the other pressing, or pressings, is formed with an upwardly-curved or cranked lip which fits against and is welded to the adjacent wall of the rib or bead, and at the front end of the roof the centre deck is omitted or cut away to provide an opening, which is covered by a panel slidable longitudinally on guides on the roof between the ribs or beads. A rib 13 is formed as an inverted V-shape pressing at the inner extremity of each side quarter panel of the roof, the depending flange 16 being welded to the side flange 21 of a watercheck frame 20. This frame, which is fitted with an insert 25 for the attachment of a trim strip 26, carries an outwardly-directed flange 24 which fits within a felt-lined slide 24<1> secured to the sliding panel 28. The sliding panel may be locked in any position by laterally movable bars 33 each flanged down at its end and provided with a pad 36 of friction material which grips the outer edge of each flange 24 when the rods 33 are moved inwardly by a locking handle (not shown). The front edge of the panel 28 carries a sealing rubber strip which presses against an inclined front wall of the water-check frame when the panel is shut and the rear edge carries a flexible rubber strip which presses on the top surface of the centre roof panel. Further ribs, Fig. 1 (not shown), are pressed in the rear body panels to blend with the ribs in the roof panels and a method of mounting the rear light in rubber mouldings, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), between the ribs is described.
