660,511. Penicillin preparations. SQUIBB & SONS, E. R. July 14, 1949 [July 14, 1948], No. 18640/49. Class 81 (i). An intramuscularly-administrable, prolonged action penicillin preparation is made by mixing together a substantially water-insoluble salt of a penicillin, an intramuscularly-acceptable surface-active agent and an intramuscularlyacceptable hydrophilic colloid. The preparation may also contain water, or alternatively the dry preparation may be suspended in water for administration. Specified penicillin salts are the procaine salts of penicillin G or penicillin F, and the aluminium, beryllium or Malachitegreen-base salts of penicillin. Suitable surfaceactive agents include polyoxyethylene ethers of partial higher fatty-acid esters of polyhydroxy alcohols, such as sorbitan, the dihexyl or dioctyl esters of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, aryl alkyl polyether alcohols and their derivatives, the sodium salts of aryl alkyl polyether alcohol sulphates, and the fatty acid esters of polyethylene glycol. Specified hydrophilic colloids are water-soluble methyl celluloses, gums (e.g. acacia and tragacanth), alginates, pectins, soluble starches, dextrins, gelatins and cellulose gums such as sodium and other watersoluble salts of carboxymethyl cellulose. The ingredients, including if desired the water, may be mixed in any order.
