1,054,278. Hypoglycemic compositions containing sulphonamides. CIBA Ltd. Nov. 2, 1964 [Nov. 5, 1963; Sept. 17, 1964], No. 44618/64. Heading A5B. [Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a sulphonamide of formula: or an N-acyl derivative or physiologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein Ph and Ph' each represent a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group; R" is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkoxy-lower alkyl, lower alkoxy-lower alkoxy, cyclo-alkyl, or substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or pyridyl; and R' is as for R", or is halogen, or R' together with R" represent an alkylene group, providing that when Ph»SO 2 »NH» is parasulphanilamido, than at least one of R' and R" is not hydrogen, in admixture or conjunction with a benzenesulphonylurea capable of lowering the blood sugar level, and whose phenyl group carries a methyl group. The term "lower" in qualifying alkyl, alkylene, alkoxy and alkanoyl groups and aliphatic carboxylic acids is used to mean groups and compounds containing up to 6 carbon atoms. Examples are given for preparing compositions of the active agents in oral unit dosage form with conventional excipients, and also for preparation of the active ingredients (see Division C2). The sulphonamide is said to delay the biological degradation of the sulphonyl-urea in vivo, and thus to potentiate the action of the latter.
