Abstract
A stain for animal tissue, especially for microscopic examination consists of a solution containing a staining agent and a mordant which are present in their equivalent chemical combining weights. The staining agents are preferably oxidized hematoxylin used at a pH of about 3, and eosin used at a pH of about 6. A solvent such as diethylene glycol may also be present to dissolve the oxidation product of hematoxylin. Examples are given of stains comprising (1) hematoxylin, an equivalent weight of aluminium potassium sulphate, potassium permanganate, diethylene glycol, potassium acid phthalate, hydrochloric acid and water, and (2) eosin, an equivalent weight of a mordant consisting of calcium acetate and chromium trioxide, potassium acid phthalate, disodium phosphate, urea, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and water.
