Abstract

660,218. Winding toroidal coils. SOC. ANON. DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS. Dec. 14, 1948 [Dec. 19, 1947], No. 32374/48. Class 83 (iv). In a toroidal coil winding machine a temporary connection is established between a mechanical drive and the grooved ring magazine for the wire at moments of peak winding tension. A coil is wound with wire from a magazine 32, Fig. III, freely supported by pulleys 35, the wire passing over a pulley 34 mounted on a driven ring 33. The ring 33 is flexible and mounted on pulleys 39 which are axially movable by a solenoid 38 to deflect the side of the ring 33 into friction driving contact with the side of the magazine 32. The solenoid is operated at the moments of peak tension by a switch 40 which is closed by a cam face 41 on the ring 33. In a modification the switch 40 and solenoid 38 are replaced by a push-rod system actuated by a cam on the ring 33. In another example a magazine 61, Fig. VI, is supported by pulleys 62 on a spider 63 which is biassed by a spring 68 in a direction opposite to the direction of winding and carries a pinion 64 in engagement with teeth on the periphery of the magazine 61. The pinion 64 is directly coupled to a wheel 65 which may frictionally engage either of two oppositely rotating driving- wheels 66, 67. When the tension in the wire exceeds a given value the wheel 65 engages the wheel 67 and the magazine is thereby accelerated in the direction of winding to reduce the tension. When the wire becomes slack the wheel 65 is urged by the spring 68 against the wheel 66 which retards the magazine and eventually rotates it in the direction opposite to the winding direction until the slack is taken up.
