Abstract
590,197. Winding thread &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Dec. 14, 1944, No. 25070. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for winding thread packages comprising a rotary device on which the packages are wound, a thread guide, relative movement being brought about axially of the rotary device on the completion of the winding of one package and the beginning of the next on the rotary device, the relative movement being controlled automatically by a member which bears against the package being wound, the driving arrangements for actuating the traverse guide and rotary device are interconnected and provided with means for adjusting their relative speeds. The end of the winding shaft 22, which is driven by a belt 26 from a motor 32, is formed to receive a mandrel 70 loosely carrying a number of sleeves 74 separated by loosely mounted discs 76, the mandrel being held in the shaft by interengaging helical grooves 72 and pins in the shaft bore. The shaft 22, which is axially displaceable by a weighted chain to present successive sleeves to the winding position drives through pulleys 168, 164, a shaft 150 carrying a face-cam 138 engaging a follower 132 carried by a spring-urged lever 114 pivoting about a bolt 104 in a block 98 mounted on a plate 90 on the machine frame. The lever 114 is adjustable with respect to the block 98 and the traverse 88 is adjustable with respect to the lever 114. To enable the relative speeds of shafts 22 and 150 to be adjusted, the pulley 168 comprises coned flanges, the separation of which may be varied to alter the effective driving radius of the pulley. The shaft 100 is carried in adjustable bearings. The cam 138 is shaped to give abrupt reversals of the traverse at the ends of its stroke. The thread, selectively furnished from one of a number of supplies 56, as it is wound upon the sleeves 74, is ironed by a member 186 attached to a spring- urged lever 34 connected to a lever 40 through a " lost-motion " device 182, 184. Upon completion of a number of winds, an axially movable back-bar 36 releases a knife 42 to sever the thread against an abutment 44 and also to open a switch 50 to stop the machine. A resetting lever 52 is provided. Specification 548,732 is referred to.
