Abstract

660,031. Extruding viscous substances by compressed air. B. B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., PUDDEFOOT, L. E., and WATTS, A. G. Jan. 5, 1950 [Jan. 6, 1949], No. 348/49. Class 102 (ii). A device for extruding viscous compositions comprises a chamber 11, for the composition, containing a piston 35 operated by compressed air, controlled by means such as a trigger 43, for extruding the composition through a nozzle 17, mechanical means operating when the air supply is cut off to hold the piston against further movement. A collet 63, carried by a piston rod 37 and movable with the trigger through trunnion pins 67, has four resiliently mounted jaws 65 which are pressed inwardly by a conical recess in the end casting 20 when the trigger is released. Air is supplied through a passage 51 in a handle 22 and when the trigger is pressed against spring 71 a valve 47 is opened to admit air through passage 53 into the chamber. When the trigger is released an air release valve 59 is opened by a rod 55, to exhaust the chamber. The composition is enclosed in a container 23, having a slidable end plate 29 engaged by the piston, the container being inserted in the chamber by unscrewing the end casting 20. The piston rod 37 may be graduated as at 73 to indicate the quantity of composition in the chamber. In an alternative embodiment the trigger may have an intermediate release position in which the air inlet valve 47 is closed and the collet is gripped on the rod, but the release valve is maintained closed to prevent the waste of the air in the chamber.
