Abstract

<PICT:1094065/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1094065/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1094065/C6-C7/3> In a device for dispersing treating compounds e.g. a rust inhibitor, in a confined space the compound is stored in a hopper 15 secured to a valve block 25 having handles 54, 52. Pivoting of handle 54 causes member 38 to be drawn into the valve block 25 so that a predetermined amount of fluid in an adjustable gap 46 can be blown through a nozzle member 64. Conduit 73 is connected to the outlet of a portable control unit (10), Fig. 1 (not shown). When switch (79) is closed vibrator 49 agitates hopper 15 and closing of contacts 62, 63 energizes valve (76) through timer (78) which breaks the circuit after a time interval to close valve (76). A fluid control valve (77) and regulator (75) control the air velocity. Nozzle 64 has marking flanges to enable the nozzle to be positioned adjacent to engine exhaust ports when the nozzle is inserted into an engine exhaust manifold. In another embodiment powder from a cartridge 172, Fig.8, fills the uppermost enclosed space 169, Fig.9, of a rotatable metering device 162 until handle 202 is rotated counter clockwise to bring the next enclosed space into the filling position, the metering device remaining stationary by means of a pawl and ratchet assembly on the return stroke of handle 202. At the end of each counter clockwise stroke of the handle 202, rod (160), Fig. 10 (not shown) is moved to displace seat 152 so that high pressure air from passage 126 Fig. 8, chamber (118) and passage (144) passes through cavity 146 and passage 158 into chamber 108 Diaphragm (130) moves to unseat valve (138) to admit high pressure air to cavity 114 Fig. 8 and thence through passage 140 and opening 142 thus forcing the powder in the lowermost space 169 Fig. 9 through passage 188 Fig. 8 into conduit 194. The high pressure air in chamber 108 is bled out through a needle valve 224 to gradually diminish the air flow thereby providing a uniform dispersion of powder.
