Abstract
648,150. Measuring liquids by volume. ELVERSTON, G. Dec. 4, 1948, No. 31428. [Class 106(v)] [Also in Group XXIX] An apparatus for measuring and delivering in a predetermined sequence different liquids in different quantities at different times comprises a measuring vessel 1 having a single delivery pipe 2 into which supply pipes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 deliver from tanks 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 each of the supply pipes being controlled by separate compressed air - operable valves 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, which in turn are controlled by air valves 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, opened or closed by the movement of a float 27 within the measuring vessel. Each of the supply valves 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and the delivery valve 13 is controlled by a piston 20 movable within a cylinder the air supply to which is controlled by opening air valves 29-33 arranged in an arcuate row above the measuring vessel and a closing air valve 34. Operation of the valves 29-33 is effected by a cam plate 44 fixed to the rotatable float shaft 43 the rotation of the shaft being actuated by a selector plate 59 which is constrained from continuous rotation under the action of drum 64 and weight 62 by a spring held trip lever mechanism 52- 58. Around the periphery of the selector plate are arranged as many detachably connected cam blocks 61 as there are cylinders 22-26 or preferably a whole multiple of that number as shown. The predetermined volume of each liquid to be measured is effected by arranging cut-off cams 46-50 in arcuate displacement, one above the other if necessary, on the float shaft 43. In operation, the float, on nearing the bottom of the vessel 1 actuates valve 29 via the cam plate 44 which allows the supply valve 14 to open whilst closing the delivery valve 13. The float then rises a predetermined distance until the cam 46 actuates the valve 34 thereby closing the supply valve 14 and opening the delivery one. The float, in dropping, trips the lever mechanism 52-58 through the tripping plate 59 secured to the shaft 43. This allows the weight loaded selector plate to rotate a predetermined angular distance to the next cam block 61 simultaneously rotating the cam 45 on the plate 44 to a position in line with the valve 30 and also rotating the cut-off cam 47 to line up with the valve 34. Thus, when the float again nears the bottom of the measuring vessel supply valve 15 is opened and the delivery valve closed whilst after flow of the predetermined volume of liquid the cam 47 operates valve 34 once again opening the delivery valve and at the same time closing the supply valve 15. The drum 64 is wound up without disturbing the setting of the plate 59 by a ratchet and pawl device. When not in use the operation of the apparatus is stopped by a U-shaped piece 67 placed beneath the boss 69 of the plate 59<SP>1</SP> its release being effected by air pressure supplied to the cylinder 73 from an air main. Stopping of the apparatus is by the engagement of a nose 70 on one of the cam blocks 61 with a piston arrangement 71 operating the piston 72 in the cylinder 73. Although not shown the inlet sides of valves 29-34 are connected to a compressed air supply main. The weight of the float 27 and rod 43 is counterbalanced by the weight and pulley arrangement 75-79 the cord 76 being connected by a swivel 82 to the upper end of the rod 43. The cam operated valves 29-34 may be replaced by electric switches operating solenoids used in lieu of the cylinders 21-26.
