Abstract

957,552. Nipping. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Sept. 17, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961], No. 38301/62. Heading B3W. A pneumatically operated wire nipping tool adapted to be held in the palm of the hand and having a pneumatic throttle control arrangement which includes a manipulative lever 71 that may be adjusted for operation of the throttle valve, comprises a cylindrical body 11 closed at one end, a detachable cylinder head 14 rotatively adjustable in the opposite end of the body, a pair of crossed levers 17, 18 carried by the cylinder head, each having a cutting jaw at one end, a pneumatically powered piston 39 for actuating the levers relatively to one another and means for releasably locking the cylinder head in its adjusted position. The cylinder head 14 has a screw threaded connection 31 with the cylinder 11, the cylinder head having a cylindrical interior area 36 which combines with the cylindrical bore 13 in the cylinder 11 to form a piston chamber. The forward end of the piston has a central slot the bottom surface of which forms a cam slide 49. The cylinder head has a rectangular interior area 41 forwardly of the cylindrical interior area 36, the rear ends of the levers 17, 18 extending slidably through the rectangular area 41. The nipper implement is pivoted on a cross pin 15 which passes through the lever 18. A spring 27 biases the levers apart so that the cammed under surface of the lever 17 is adapted to ride up and down the cam slide 49. A pair of coil springs 77 disposed between the piston and a shoulder 42 on the cylinder head 14 urge the piston 39 rearwardly. On pressing the lever 71 down upon the cap of the slide valve 58 the O-ring 64 seals over the vent 65, the exhaust orifice 66 is closed and pressure air flows through ports 68, 67 to the piston chamber to drive the piston 39 forwardly. On release of the lever 71, the valve is loaded by a spring 61 so that an O-ring seals over the inlet port 63 and the inlet orifice is sealed, the exhaust orifice 65 being opened and the piston cylinder vented to atmosphere. A screw 84 threaded into the back of the piston cylinder co-operates with the piston and regulates the stroke thereof. A lock screw is provided to supplement the threaded frictional engagement of the cylinder head in the housing. In a modification one of the nipper implement levers is rigidly fastened to the cylinder head.
