Abstract
Saturated aliphatic fluorocarbon compounds are prepared by electrolysing a solution of liquid hydrogen fluoride containing a soluble ether compound having carbon-bonded atoms replaceable by fluorine, and recovering one or more saturated aliphatic fluorocarbon ether compounds consisting solely of carbon, fluorine and oxygen. Monoether compounds may have the formula R-O-R1 or R1-CO2-O-CF2-R1, where R and R1 represent saturated aliphatic fluorocarbon radicals which may be the same or different. Compounds containing five or more carbon atoms in the molecule have boiling points above room temperature. Other compounds prepared by the process are saturated aliphatic fluorcarbon polyethers which contain two or more oxygen atoms, for example decafluoro-1,2-dimethoxyethane and octadecafluoro diethylene glycol diethyl ether.
