Abstract

The invention comprises saturated cyclic fluorocarbon ethers represented by the formula <FORM:0718318/IV (b)/1> where m is 3 or 4 and n has a value such that the total number of carbon atoms is in the range of 6 to 10. Such compounds are obtained by electrolysis of the corresponding hydrocarbon derivatives (alkylene oxides) dissolved in anhydrous liquid hydrogen fluoride, at a cell voltage (about 5 to 6 volts) not high enough to result in the formation of free fluorine. Unsaturated starting compounds can also be used. The above products are also obtained by a similar electrolysis of straight chain fatty acids which contain 6 to 10 carbon atoms in the molecule, to give a cyclic fluorocarbon ether having the same number of carbon atoms. The products are mixtures of compounds containing five- and six-membered rings. An example describes the preparation of a product having the formula C6F12O consisting mainly of 2-trifluoromethyl nonafluoropentylene oxide with some 2-pentafluoroethyl heptafluorobutylene oxide. Similarly prepared from the corresponding acids are products having the empirical formul C7F14O, C3F16O, C9F18O and C10F20O, believed in each case to consist mainly of the six-membered ring isomer with a minor proportion of the five-membered ring isomer. The products are of use as dielectric or insulating fluids for electrical devices such as switches and transformers, and for radio-frequency and microwave equipment, for the flotation of elements in mechanical devices, as heat-transfer media, hydraulic mechanism fluids, lubricants, and diluents and reaction media for chemical reactions.
