Abstract

659,190. Making hollow-ware. SPARKLETS, Ltd., and ROBERTS, C. W. Feb. 18, 1949, No. 4459. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Casting composite articles; uniting by fusion - A hollow metal body such as a cylindrical container for compressed gas is made by die-casting the body in two parts having complementary mating surfaces, bringing the parts together and then die-casting additional metal around the outer periphery of the mating-surfaces. The surfaces are preferably formed with peripheral flanges which are pressed together as the additional metal shrinks on cooling. The additional metal may be applied at such a temperature that a fusion joint is formed between the abutting surfaces. Alternatively a layer of adhesive or sealing compound may be applied to the abutting surfaces before the casting of the additional metal.
