Abstract
1,260,084. Making a ball and socket joint. VALMET OY. 10 April, 1970 [17 April, 1969], No. 17057/70. Heading E2F. A ball and socket joint is made of ferrous alloy by casting the socket piece around the ball piece and then tempering the ball joint to achieve the desired clearance. To prevent welding of the ball to the socket during casting the ball prior to the casting operation is coated with a layer of graphite or similar material. The tempering may be for 1 to 8 hours at a temperature between 850‹ and 950‹C. In the figure ball 4, has a layer of graphite 3, applied before socket 5 is cast round it.
