Abstract

Lead or lead-lined bromine receptacles are rendered corrosion resistant by providing an oxidizing agent in the vessel for the hydrogen bromide contaminant. The oxidizing agents may be metal oxides such as lead peroxide or manganese dioxide, or salts of the oxygen acids of bromine such as bromates or hypobromites. The latter may be added as an aqueous solution or generated in situ by adding an aqueous alkaline liquor containing for example sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxides, when a mixture of bromide and hypobromite is formed. Alternatively the metal oxides or alkalies may be supported above the liquid bromine level in baskets. The lead peroxide may also be formed on the walls of the vessel by anodic oxidation, using sulphuric acid as electrolyte. A purification and distillation apparatus for bromine is described, where the boiling vessel is protected by the presence of lead peroxide or bromate and the condenser filled with lead peroxide lumps.
