Abstract
658,580. Thermo-electric batteries. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 7, 1949, No. 15125. Convention date, June 10, 1948. [Class 53] A flexible thermo-electric device for measuring temperatures is made by introducing a rod 1 of iron or copper, for example, of 3 mm. diameter, into a tube 2 of constantan having an internal diameter of 8 mm. and a wall thickness of 2 mm., filling the space between the two elements in vacuo with dry powdered insulating material 3 such as magnesium oxide and swaging and drawing down the assembly to a small diameter, for example 0.25 to 0.3 mm. A suitable length is then cut off and the two elements welded together at one end 5 and provided with leads 1, 4 at the other end. The device being flexible can be bent and inserted in grooves and openings for the measurement of temperatures in engine heads, bearing blocks, the interior of objects being heated in highfrequency furnaces &c.
