Abstract

A sintered shaped mass of an alkaline earth metal fluoride is obtained by incorporating in the fluoride an alkali metal or another alkaline earth metal fluoride which forms a lower melting point eutectic with the initial fluoride. Up to 5 per cent of the other fluoride may be used. The alkaline earth metal fluoride can be pre-fired at 1000 DEG C., ground to required size, shaped after addition of the other fluoride, and heated to 600 DEG -880 DEG C.
