Abstract
Catalysts of high mechanical strength are obtained by impregnating a carrier with a solution of a metal compound decomposable by heat to the oxide, heating to produce the oxide, reimpregnating the material with a further solution of the metal compound, drying, compressing into pellets and then heating to form the oxide. An example describes the preparation of a nickel oxide-chromium oxide on alumina catalyst from nickel and chromium nitrate solutions. Other specified active component metals are iron, cobalt, copper, manganese, and molybdenum. The catalysts may be employed for hydrogenating and refining oils, the hydrogenation of aldehydes to alcohols, of esters to alcohols and the hydrogenating purification of alcohols.
