Abstract

1450700 Hydrorefining oils BASF AG 21 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 59405/73 Heading C5E Technical white oil is made from a petroleum fraction which boils in the range 200‹ to 550‹ C. and contains aromatic compounds and nitrogencontaining, oxygen-containing, and sulphurcontaining compounds by catalytic hydrogenation using a catalyst which has been prepared by impregnating an alumina support, which can contain up to 5 wt. per cent silica, with a solution containing Ni<SP>2+</SP> cations, MoO 4 <SP>2-</SP> anions and PO 4 <SP>3-</SP> anions. This hydrogenation can be carried out at 250-370‹C and 30-200 atmospheres to prepare white oils, which can be used as printing ink oils or carrier oils for insecticides, from gas oil, spindle oil or lubricating oil. Medicinal white oil can be prepared from the technical white oils by hydrogenation in the presence of a base metal catalyst at 220- 330‹ C. and 50-250 atmospheres. The base metal catalyst can be one prepared by precipitating a material of the formula washing, compressing calcining and reduction with hydrogen to metallic nickel; it can be diluted with aluminium oxide of high surface area.
