Abstract

657,618. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Dec. 3, 1947, No. 31981. [Class 100 (i)] A sheet-feeding apparatus in which the sheets are fed in overlapped condition by tapes moving over a feed board 6 from a pile by mechanism such as is described in Specification 427,041 is constructed with a scraping device 11b which engages the undersurface of the leading sheet 7a as it is being fed to a machine and acts upon the front edge of the next sheet 7b to separate it from the overlying sheet. The scraper is carried by a radial arm 11 on an adjustably mounted shaft 10, and is formed with an inclined edge 11c. The scraper is arranged to move with respect to the layboard against the direction of the flow of the sheets. The sheets are finally registered preliminarily by the front edge of the arm 11, and the scraper presses the sheet 7b against the board 6 to smooth the front edge portion of the sheet. The sheets are finally fed by oscillating grippers 13 to an impression cylinder 13 as described in Specifications 657,616 and 657,617. The shaft 10 is mounted in adjustable bearings which are movable independently in a plane parallel to the direction of feed, so as to adjust the scrapers, which may be four in number, to the angle of the leading edge of the sheets.
