Abstract
In a washing, scouring, or cleansing process a detergent is used containing unsaponified but saponifiable compounds such as rosin or coconut oil and free alkali so that when added to the wash liquor the greater part of the saponifiable material is not saponified until the detergent originally present has absorbed the dirt, whereupon saponification takes place and continued lathering occurs. The composition may be formed as a powder or it may be formed in solution in the wash liquor by first dissolving the detergent and then adding the saponifiable material and alkali. In examples: (1) coconut oil is peptized by the addition of a sulphated secondary alcohol and mixed with a powdery detergent consisting of saponified gum acacia. Finally sodium carbonate is quickly added and only superficially mixed in; (2) coconut oil and rosin are mixed with a dry alkaline soap and sodium carbonate and ground to a rough powder; (3) coconut oil and rosin are mixed with a hydrophilic colloid prepared by highspeed grinding of gum tragacanth, gum acacia and gum karaya with a small amount of china clay and sodium carbonate, and sulphonated lauryl alcohol and sodium carbonate added; (4) coconut oil, soap, and sodium carbonate are dissolved in tepid water in a washing machine and the temperature raised after the majority of the dirt has been removed, whereupon the coconut oil is saponified and maintains the lathering. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 17077/02, [Class 91].ALSO:A washing, scouring or cleansing composition contains one or more saponified detergent materials, at least one unsaponified but saponifiable organic compound such as rosin or coconut oil having when saponified continuously well lathering properties, and sufficient alkali material to saponify said compound, the advantage of the composition being that when added to the wash liquor the greater part of the saponifiable compound is not saponified until the already saponified detergent materials have absorbed the dirt or other impurities of the wash liquor. The detergent may be a soap of a fatty acid or an alkaline hydrophilic colloid prepared, for example, by high-speed grinding of gum tragacanth, gum acacia and gum karaya with a small amount of china clay and sodium carbonate. The saponifiable material may be dissolved in an organic solvent such as alcohol or in sulphated alcohols or dispersed with such sulphated alcohols, alkyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensates, &c. or mixed with emulsifiers and alkali. The alkali content may be provided by sodium carbonate caustic soda, sodium metasilicate, or sodium phosphates. The composition may be formed in solution in the wash liquor by first dissolving the detergent and then adding the saponifiable material and alkali. In examples: (1) coconut oil is peptised by the addition of a sulphated secondary alcohol and mixed with a powdery detergent consisting of saponified gum acacia. Finally, sodium carbonate is quickly added and only superficially mixed in; (2) coconut oil and rosin are mixed with a dry alkaline soap and sodium carbonate and ground to a rough powder; (3) coconut oil and rosin are mixed with a hydrophilic colloid referred to above, sulphonated lauryl alcohol, and sodium carbonate; (4) coconut oil, soap and sodium carbonate are dissolved in tepid water in a washing machine and the temperature raised after the majority of the dirt has been removed, whereupon the coconut oil is saponified and maintains the lathering. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 17077/02, [Class 91].
