Abstract

656,382. Cooling cylinders; driving dynamos. DUNLOP, S. (Fiat Soc. per Azioni). Jan. 11, 1949, No. 740. [Classes 7(ii) and 7(iv)] [Also in Group XIII] In a motor vehicle with a transversely arranged engine the radiator fan unit is driven by a pair of conical friction wheels and is coupled and uncoupled by axial movement of the fan shaft effected either by hand or automatically through a thermostat. In the form shown, the conical friction wheels 10, 11 are held in frictional contact by a spring 14 and a rocker lever 17 acts on the end of the fan shaft 12 to disconnect the drive. The operation of the lever 17 may be by hand or automatically by a thermostatic device depending upon the temperature of the water in the radiator or in the engine water jacket. The friction wheel assembly may be carried on a base plate secured to the engine. Alternatively the conical friction driving wheel 10 may be keyed to the end of the dynamo shaft which carries at its other end the pulley driven from the engine crankshaft (Fig. 2, not shown).
