Abstract

655,659. Lighting burners. BAKER & CO., Inc. June 28, 1949, No. 17096. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1948. [Class 75(iii)] An automatic igniter for the ignition of fuel in finely divided state capable of being catalytically oxidized in a flowing fuel-air mixture, comprises a fine diameter wire of catalyst metal formed as a closely spaced helical coil adapted to be electrically heated to a temperature substantially below the ignition temperature of said fuelair mixture, and below the recrystallization temperature of the catalyst metal, the coil being shaped so that its axis comprises a plurality of bends. The igniter element 1 may be in the form of a coiled coil or of W or S shape, and may be mounted between leads 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, the former being electrically connected to a sleeve 14 passing through an insulating bush 13 in a metal cap 12 and connected by a lead 7 to the secondary winding of a transformer 6, and the lead 11<SP>1</SP> being connected to the cap 12 which is pressed over a metal tube 8 connected through a lead 7<SP>1</SP> to the transformer secondary winding. Flash tubes 4, 4<SP>1</SP> lead from a housing surrounding the igniter 1 to flash ports 3, 3<SP>1</SP> for igniting burners 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, respectively. Specification 652,667 is referred to.
