Abstract

209,782. White, W. A. Sept. 13, 1922. Lighting burners and the like by electric devices.-An electric igniter for liquid-fuel furnaces comprises a coiled bare resistance wire d anchored at the outer end of, and wound in a double spiral on, an insulating-support c carried by a tubular body a and enclosed by a perforated metal housing h, which, in operation, is rendered incandescent. The resistance wire d is connected to terminals e to which a cable f is led through the handle portion of the body a. The housing is formed in two screw-connected parts, one of which is screwed on the body a and is provided at its forward end with a tapered bore which receives a plug c<1> adapted to prevent the entry of oil into the body portion when the igniter is in use. The rear portion of the body a is provided with a handle n and terminates in a stuffing-box m through which the cable f passes out to a plug for connection with a source of current supply. A switch is also provided on the body a. The igniter may be mounted on a part of the furnace and adapted to be. swung or slidden, either freely or in opposition to a return spring, towards and away from the burner to be ignited. The tubular part a may be curved so as to facilitate positioning of the housing h with respect to the burner.
