SELF-IGNITING GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,273, dated September 19, 1899.

To all whom it may concern,.- l
Be it known that I, ALBERT RAMMosER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at J aegerstrasse 4, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Igniters for Incandescent Burners and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion,sucl1 as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification.
The invention relates to an improved igniter for incandescent burners and the like, the igniting powers of which are exceedingly lasting, which is obtained by the so-called glowing body being arranged entirely outside the dame-zone of the burner. The glowing body is arranged Within the burner and is exposed only to the mixture of gas and air, so that its igniting or glowingpowers are not impaired by contact with the llame, and hence increase rather than diminish each time the Y igniter is used.
The invention isillustrated in the preferred forms it may assume in the drawings, where- 1n- Figure l shows a burner in central longitudinal section with a hollow concentric mantle-carrier, the glowing body being arranged at the base of the carrier and the heat-conducting wires led upwardly through the carrier to near the forked portion thereof. Fig. 2 is a modified form, the glowing body being shown located to one side of the base of the carrier and the cond noting-wires led outside the burner and obliquely to the top of the carrier.. Fig. 3 shows the glowing body similarly located; but here the conducting-wires are arranged directly above the gauze top of the burner.
The igniter comprises the hollow mantlecarrier T, Fig. l, forked at the top and slightly curved and extending through the head B of the burner some distance into the latter. At the base of this carrier is secured the glowing body P,'from whence the insulated platina or palladium wires D pass to a point approximate the forked extremity of the carrier.
In the adaptation shown in Fig. 2 the glowing body P is shown arranged to one side of Serial No. 698,855. (.No model.)
In Fig. 3 I have shown the conductingwires D terminating directlyabove the gauze top of the burner and supported by an arm T.
The operation of the device is as follows: The gas flowing into the burner B upon opening the gas-cock O spreads over the body P, causing it to glow, whereby the platina or palladium wires D are brought to white heat and effect the ignition above the burner.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple; It is thoroughly reliable in operation, and with the forms shown in Figs. 2 and 3 any common form of mantle-support may be employed.
Having described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. An automatic igniter for incandescent gas-burners and the like, embodying a pellet located within the mixing-chamber,said pellet composed of a substance adapted to glow on contact with gas, and means connected with the pellet for conducting the heat generated thereby to a point above the burner, substantially as described.
2. .An automatic igniter for incandescent gas-burners and the like embodying a selfigniting pellet located within the mixingchamber,and means connected with the pellet for transferring the heat generated thereby to a point above the burner and approximate the mantle, substantially as described.
3. The combination with an incandescent gas-burner having an incandescent mantle suspended on a carrier, of a self-igniting pellet arranged within the burner and a platinum wire extended upwardly from said pellet to the outside of the burner and in close proximity to the mantle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
